It is not always immediately obvious that a mouse is in the house.  They can be quiet and clever when making their way around your home.  They typically stay inside walls, only coming out to grab a quick bite, and then disappearing into the darkness once again.

A tell tale sign that a mouse is sneaking around your house at night is the appearance of dirt or oil on the floor trim.  Mice scurry around very close to the wall for safety.  They keep so close to the wall that they brush up against the trim when running around looking for food.  Often times their fur can leave marks of dirt on white trim that is easy to notice if you know what to look for.

You can also look for bite marks on wires, wood and pipes.  Mice will chomp on almost anything to see if it provides food or hydration.  Inspecting wires is especially important to ensure that the coating is not damaged by their teeth.  If it is, replace wires immediately.

And last but not least, look for mice droppings that are about the size of a large grain of rice.  It is important to be careful with mice droppings if discovered.  The droppings can carry hantavirus, which is a pulmonary disease that mimics symptoms of the flu.  You become infected when you breathe in air infected with hantaviruses that are shed in rodent urine and droppings.  If you notice rodent droppings around your house, wear a respirator when cleaning and make sure to call Total Home Pest Control to assess the situation.  Generally, mice don’t travel alone.  They also reproduce very quickly and you can end up with a sizable infestation that can get out of control.
